Late January had us hunting in central AZ hunting javelina with our nephews Shan and Leon Sherwood from Nephi, Utah. This was their first hunt in AZ and they were both excited to be in the desert hunting for what we call "the stink pigs". They had a short time frame to hunt so we had our work cut out for us to find and kill two pigs. We started out glassing on opening day with a cold north wind blowing 15-20 mph and it seemed to have the pigs down. With 4-5 of us glassing that morning zero pigs were found but we saw mule deer and a AZ grey fox. The afternoon found us split up trying to locate a group of pigs to chase. Around 4pm the wind finally let up and we glassed a bunch of pigs working their way out of a canyon to feed in the prickly pear. The boys were set up on an open hillside approximately 150 yds waiting for the shot. With some exciting words of encouragement from his dad Leon made a perfect shot on his first big game animal. Big brother Shan tried to make it a sweep with some good shooting but came up just short. We had a great time with the family and can't wait for another hunt with the Sherwood boys.
