After a lot of procrastination I've finally finished the video. Hope you enjoy!
Texas Style
We had a phenomenal late elk season in 2013!! We went 6 for 6 in only three days of hunting!! And our average gross score was just over 315"!

Two of the bulls were taken in Unit 1 with Mike and Devin. Their stories and pictures will be posted soon. The other four bulls were taken in unit 3A-3C. J Lewis and I had the privilege of hunting with a great group of guys from Dripping Springs, Texas. Jim and Weldon Smith, David Cooper, and Chris Masterson all applied together and made the trek to AZ. With Thanksgiving crowding the start of their hunt, Jim, Weldon, and David opted to fly in on opening day while Chris made the drive with guns and gear.

The gang arrived in Heber at 2:15pm on opening day and we quickly loaded them up and headed to the woods. J and I had located numerous bulls that morning and had three 6 points bedded in a cut. Within 2 hours, we had all three bulls on the ground! I've seen or heard of a couple of "double kills" but never a "triple". It was awesome and I was able to capture it on film.
We spent the entire next day cutting and packing-out bulls. But we still had a tag to fill. On the afternoon of day 3, Chris was settling his crosshairs on an AZ bull and made good on a couple tough shots. All I know is these Texas boys can shoot!! They did a great job and were all rewarded with great bulls and memories they will never forget. Thanks again guys!

We had a great group of guys and some good mule deer to chase. And we even left some for 2014 (some not by choice).

Jack Kolar from WI traveled to AZ in hopes of harvesting a buck worthy of a life-size mount. Little did Jack know that his dreams were about to come true. One the evening of day 1, Jack and I had to get aggressive on a bedded buck due to other hunters in the area. We were able to nudge the buck and Jack made a great shot at 260 yards as the buck was trying to slip out of the area.
Steve Ferenczy from OH was up next. On the afternoon of day 4, we were set up on a buck I had found that morning. After 4 days of hunting, Steve made the decision to try and harvest the buck. A couple hours later and Steve's buck was down. I captured Steve's hunt on film and it was featured on an episode of Cabela's Out West. Dave Betters from CO also traveled to AZ to hunt with BTO. Mike Hancock and Dave hunted hard for a buck that any mule deer hunter would be proud of. He was in a tough spot and often hard to locate. But we beat the odds and had numerous encounters with this great buck. Unfortunately, Dave had a few missed opportunities and the big, wide 4x4 made it through the season. This big buck seemed to have 9 lives! Maybe next year.......
Andrew has been applying for an early elk tag since 2000, and he finally pulled a tag. We hunted for 5 days before Andrew pulled the trigger on a great bull. Congrats to Andrew and I'm sure I will be hunting elk with him again in the future. Video of Andrew's hunt will be posted later this winter.
When they arrived in camp I had a gift waiting for them. I showed them video of the 385" bull that my archery client had missed. I had lost the bull during the archery hunt but was able to relocate him just days before the start of the rifle hunt. Unfortunately, he was missing an eye guard.
After watching the footage, Leonard and Tom decided that Tom would be the lucky hunter to go after the bull. The rest of Tom's hunt was captured on film and aired on an episode of Cabela's Out West.
Congrats to Tom on a great AZ bull and a heck of a story to tell for years to come. Click on the link below to watch Tom's hunt.
He was able to travel out with his two friends Mike and Tom. Tom had also drawn a tag. We were able to look over some good bulls before this bull strolled out on a big point sunning himself. Leonard made a perfect 150 yard shot and the bull ran about 75 yards before piling up. Congrats on a great bull and thanks for letting BTO be a part of your hunt.
We were able to harvest his bull on the 3rd day of Art's hunt. We watched the bull fight a 340 type bull before he walked up to 25 yards and presented a shot. Art's great bull gross scored a little over 384. Congrats Art and thanks for letting me be part of your hunt.
This year we had that privilege. With Dane already tagging a great bull during the archery hunt it was now Josh's turn.
With Josh taking a break from college and flying home the day prior to the hunt it did not leave a lot of preparation time for him before his hunt. We began scouting in July and first located this bull on July 6th while camping with the family. We also had a couple of good encounters with him during the archery season with one being under 40 yards but could just not seal the deal. On the second day of the early rifle season with his brother Dane on point and his Brother in-law Colby Hale helping Josh killed this great Az bull.
It was great to get the entire family involved in the hunt and with Granddad's cooking and Mom (Melissa) in camp for both kills made for great memories for our family. Stay tuned to see the hunt in its entirety with multiple encounters with this bull through out the season in the near future on our blog. Good Job Boys!!!
Dave drew a 3A-3C archery bull tag after 11 years of applying. We had some awesome encounters that neither one of us will ever forget. The first occurred on opening morning with a big, 6x6 at 12 yards. Later that evening, we had another great bull moaning and screaming at only 18 yards.

On the evening of day 8, Dave was able to get an arrow in his Arizona trophy. Click on the link at the bottom of this post to watch Dave's hunt that was featured on Cabela's Out West.
With my dad having a client, I was the one to get to hunt with Dane. We began our scouting trips over the July 4th weekend and made many more leading up to hunt. The horn growth was looking good as we had seen many good bulls. The weeks of summer flew by and before we knew it it was the night before the opener. Opening morning was relatively slow as we had pressure from other hunters and the bulls had all but shut down in the area we were hunting. We finally caught a break on Sunday morning and evening as we had two of the bulls on our hit list almost within shooting distance. Monday morning found us moving to the west looking for where the bulls had been pressured to. We bedded some bulls and decided to be back in that evening. As we were sneaking into the green trees a bull let out a bugle. We hustled to get the wind a little more in our favor and get set up. I cow called once as the bull let out a scream and was already on top of us at 50 yards. Dane elected to pass on this 340 type bull. We continued through the green trees listening for bugles and glassing. As we got to a good looking bottom another bull bugled down the ridge. We crossed the canyon and were waiting for the bull to bugle again. As we were waiting we see a spike headed our way. With the night being so slow we decided to see how close we could cow call him into. The spike came by looking for us at around 20 yards and got behind us. We stood up and began working in the direction of the last bugle when the spike came running by us headed back to where he came from. We worked forward and now could see him with another spike. I caught some movement off towards the bottom as a bull stood up out of his bed to readjust. I could tell that he was a shooter bull and we began to get a plan of attack together. The bull was bedded in a set of young aspen trees and was alone. We began to stalk in on the bull and before we knew it it was raining and we were now at 38 yards. Dane drew as I was going to cow call to get the bull to stand up and fully expose his vitals. I had never seen a bull do what he did, as I cow called he laid his head sideways all the way on the ground as if he was hiding. Dane let off and we just looked at each other. About a minute later the bull picked his head up and began to stand up. Dane drew back and released just as the bull took a step hitting him a little back. The bull began to try to take off as i began to cow call to stop him. The bull stopped as I ranged him at 42 yards and Dane made the second shot count, putting it through both lungs. The bull ran 40 yards and piled up. We began to celebrate as we knew the bull was better than we initially thought. We started wading our way through the 7-8 foot tall aspens to the bull. The bull continued to grow as we got closer. The bull had a big inline and mass to spare. It took until 130 AM to get the bull back to camp, we were all anxious to see what the bull would score. We gross scored Dane's bull at 383 and change. Not too bad for his first archery bull. Congrats again Dane, I enjoyed our time spent together as brothers.
Its always a good time chasing mule deer around with a bow, and enjoying the local fair, parade, and rodeo. But the icing on the cake is Craig's moms cooking and hospitality.

Here are just a few pictures from our trip. Video coming soon. Enjoy.
BUT WHEN THE FISHING IS THIS GOOD IT'S HARD NOT TO SHARE!!

For my 16th anniversary my wife and I spent last weekend at Lake Powell getting our fish on. I normally don't waste my free time fishing, but all reports were "snooze ya lose". So my brothers and sisters-in-law had to check it out for ourselves. My nephew also joined us since it was his birthday.
This wasn't a fishing trip, this was a "catching" trip. Both days we caught over 100 fish and ended up filleting 50-60 stripers a day. We had a blast! If you have been thinking of going......... just go! You wont regret it.

Watch as Jarom experiences the highs and lows of turkey hunting during the last two days of the Jr. season. It was a tough season and very few birds. But we managed to go 3 for 3 in 6 days of hunting. Enjoy.
My good friend, Ben Williams has two boys that drew tags (Jarom and Trevor). My 2nd daughter, Makenzie also drew a Jr. tag. So the plan was to get in our scouting then hit the Jr. season hard. Hopefully we could fill 2 out of the 3 tags before the general season opened. The first morning, Ben was able to call in 4 jakes to 10 yards and his younger boy, Trevor let the lead fly.
Now days, it's evolved slightly. It's still the same basic principle, but the prize has changed from Easter eggs to elk sheds; from candy to cash.
Enjoy these pictures of some of the brown sheds we've found during the last week of March. Most of them were found by my brother-in-law, Andrew.
She is alot better looking than all the partners I have hunted with, she is also the first hunting partner I have ever held hands with while out in the woods, and lastly she sure smells alot better than all of you. My wife Melissa has sporatically gone scouting or just driving around in the woods on and off for several years now, but just this past winter we have had the opportunity to spend more time together since the kids have all grown up.
Just last month on only her second calling stand she had ever sat while holding a gun, she shot her first coyote. Also this weekend while on her first horn hunting trip she found her first brown horn within the first 15 minutes. She was also with me when we found a pretty nice 7x7 pick up head. Enjoy some pictures of our adventures together and try to get your better half out enjoying what we all love to do so much.
Little did I know that a harmless horn hunting trip 16 years ago would consume the life of my brother-in-law. He eats and sleeps Horn-Hunting! And over the years he's gotten pretty dang good at it. This past weekend he came up to do a little looking around. I sent him into an area that I knew should produce an antler or two. To my surprise, he pulled 5 horns out, including a match set of goofy 5 points and this cool 7 point.

The next day we went into a nasty canyon to glass for bulls. We didn't glass any elk so we decided to take a short walk. I wanted to hit a ridge where I found a giant 177 5/8" horn last year in hopes of finding the other side. After about an hour of circling I spotted a tine sticking up in the thick brush.
We circled back toward the truck and added 4 more horns to our tally. But we left 2 ancient chalk horns there. In 2 1/2 hours of hiking we found 7 horns, but no Browns.
He had planned on guiding an elk client last fall until he found out his wife was expecting and due the middle of September. To make matters worse, J drew a unit 1 archery bull tag! By the start of the hunt, J's wife was already having contractions and in the early stages of labor. By day 4, J got the "word" that it was time to kill because a baby was on the way. On the morning of day 5, J got his shot at a great 6x7 at 35 yards. But he missed! As the bull ran off, another bull came up the ridge and stopped in the exact same spot. This time J made good with his recurve and his bull was down.
J had one more hunt up his sleeve. J had drawn a Barbary sheep tag in New Mexico during the month of February. This is what J said about his hunt.
"My Barbary sheep hunt was about the hardest hunt I have ever done. These sheep
are extremely spooky with excellent eyesight. We went the second week of the
hunt and backpacked into a remote area. I saw several rams including two
giants. But was not able to put it together. We spent 3 days and did over 25
miles and when we got back to the truck with no ram I knew I had to come back.
The last week I made it back with a new plan to come in from a different area to
access some sheep we had sent from several miles off on the first trip. On the
second day we located the sheep in the same canyon and were able to get right to
500 yards when they busted us crawling through the grass. I set up as the sheep
were all heading up over the ridge to some deep canyons on the other side. My
ram and another separated from the yews and stopped just long enough to get a
shot off. My ram was down about 11 miles from the truck! We were able to get
the ram all packed out by the next afternoon after well over 20 miles total with
heavy packs. My ram was 27 inches long with a good beard and chaps and is one
of my hardest earned animals ever!"
